MARC to hold First Workshop on Improved Characterization Methods for Modified Binders, Emulsions, and Mixtures in May 2014

The Modified Asphalt Research Center (MARC) will be hosting its first workshop on state of the art Test Procedures for Characterization of Performance of Polymer and Oil Modified asphalt materials on mAY . The next workshop will be held in May 29-30, 2014. The 2 day workshop will cover characterization procedures for binder, emulsions, and mixtures developed as part of the Asphalt Research Consortium project. MARC holds 4th Workshop on Mixing and Compaction of Hot and Warm Asphalt Mixtures in November 2013

The Modified Asphalt Research Center (MARC) hosted its fourth workshop on the factors affecting mixing and compaction temperatures of conventional and non-conventional HMA products on November 13-14, 2013. The main objective of this workshop was to introduce new technologies to evaluate mix components properties that affect compaction and to provide an open forum for discussion on how these technologies can be applied to improve current mix design procedures. The Modified Asphalt Research Center (MARC) hosted its third workshop on the factors affecting mixing and compaction temperatures of conventional and non-conventional HMA products on August 14-15, 2013. The main objective of this workshop was to introduce new technologies to evaluate mix components properties that affect compaction and to provide an open forum for discussion on how these technologies can be applied to improve current mix design procedures. Professor Bahia Delivers Short Courses on Advanced Chatracterizxation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

UW-MARC director Professor Hussain Bahia delivered a three day short course in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 8-10, 2013. The course objective was to cover advanced capacitation on the properties and tests of asphalt binders and mixtures with introduction to laboratory measurement techniques to assess material performance capabilities. The audience included engineers, chemists, researchers, and professionals in the asphalt paving area in Brazil.

The Modified Asphalt Research Center (MARC) hosted its second workshop about the factors affecting mixing and compaction temperatures of conventional and non-conventional HMA products on March 13-14, 2013. The workshop was to introduced new technologies for evaluation of mix components properties that affect compaction. An open forum was provided for discussion on improving current mix design procedures through implimentation of new technoglogies discussed in this workshop.

MARC Director Presents at NorBit 2012 Seminar, Norway

MARC Director, Professor Bahia delivered two presentations on "New Test Methods for Bituminous Binders" and "Effect of WMA Additives on Binders Workability and Performance" at the NorBit 2012 Seminar in Oslo, Norway. The event is organized by the Norwegian Bitumen Association (NorBit), which is a non-profit association established in August 2009 with the purpose of spreading information and knowledge on bituminous binders.

Professor Bahia Delivers Short Courses on Cold Weather Pavements in Chile - South America

UW-MARC director Professor Hussain Bahia in collaboration with Professor Rodrigo Delgadillo (Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria) delivered two training courses in Arica and Santiago, Chile, on asphalt technology for pavements in cold weather regions. Topics discussed included binder modification for cold regions, importance of physical and chemical aging, mixture testing for cold regions, and recommended construction practices. MARC Researchers Deliver Short Course on Advanced Characterization and Modeling of Asphalt Materials in Colombia - South America

Professor Hussain Bahia and Dr. Raul Velasquez in collaboration with Professor Fredy Reyes (Universidad Javeriana) delivered a week long training course in Bogota-Colombia, on advanced characterization and modeling of asphalt materials. Second International Workshop on Asphalt Mastics

The second International Workshop on Asphalt Mastics, organized by UW-Madison TU Delft, and KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), was held on June 18, 2012 at TU Delft, Netherlands. The workshop was used as a platform for exchange of information on the state-of-art in various aspects of modeling and characterization of asphalt mastics. MARC Hosts LucoBit Representatives

Following an invitation by MARC visiting Professor Nader Tabatabaee, LucoBit CEO, Mr. Riegler and technical consultant, Dr. Harr, visited MARC and became familiar with the latest findings and research projects being conducted. During the visit, MARC researchers presented their latest findings and discussed the organizations goals and objectives. The LucoBit representatives also toured MARC laboratories and observed became familiar with the latest MARC test methods and procedures.

International Visitors Tour MARC Laboratories

MARC was host to two international guests this May. Professor Taesoon Park of Seoul National University of Technology and Mr. Nagpal of Bengal Bitumen (India) became familiar with MARC laboratory procedures and research projects during tours of the MARC laboratories. During the visits, MARC researchers presented their latest findings and shared and exchanged information on research topics of mutual interest.

MARC trains ETG members in use of the Linear Amplitude Sweep test

MARC held a webinar on Feb 22 in which Ms. Cassie Hintz and Dr. Raul Velasquez explained the conduction and analysis of the newly introduced Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) binder fatigue test. Participants were shown videos of the LAS procedure implementation into commonly used Dynamic Shear Rheometers (DSR). The session also included a demonstrated of the use of the LAS analysis spreadsheet and data interpretation. The meeting was ended with a question and answer session held by Dr. Velasquez on the test theory and procedure.

Prof. Bahia Presents at the AMAP 12th Annual Meeting

The Association of Modified Asphalt Producer's held its 12th annual meeting Feb 15-17 in Kansas City Missouri, in which producers, researchers and manufacturers involved in the modified asphalt industry presented the latest developments in the field. During the event, Professor Hussain Bahia presented MARC's latest advancements, recent findings and newly developed test procedures and apparatus.
